Palm Sunday is a Christian celebration that commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem, when a multitude of inhabitants welcomed him as the Messiah and Son of God. This fact is considered as the beginning of Holy Week and is also the renewal of faith in God.
According to the New Testament Gospel narrative, Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem in triumph. The chronology of the events is narrated by Saint Matthew, where he describes that the people carpeted with their robes, the path that Jesus travelled and at the same time they acclaimed him:
"Long live the Son of God!
¿How is Palm Sunday celebrated in Ecuador?
In the city of Quito, and in most cities of Ecuador, Palm Sunday is celebrated with processions in which the religious faithful gather together with various dance organizations that accompany and give the symbolic welcome of Jesus as the Son of God.
For this day, the faithful devotees of the Christian tradition usually carry palm branches and olives or other trees in their hands, to the rhythm of songs and prayers of praise that welcome Christian Holy Week.
These bouquets and olive trees are blessed before carrying out the processions. In many houses, people usually hang some of these bouquets in different places in their homes, as a sign of receiving the blessings for their houses and families, since the day symbolically represents the acceptance of Jesus as the Son of God and as our Savior.
The Route of the 7 Churches
It is one of the traditions that has remained intact for 2 centuries and consists of visiting on Holy Thursday, the seven Churches located on Calle de las Siete Cruces (now Calle Garcia Moreno) in the historic center.
According to tradition, in every church believers have to pray an Our Father, seven Hail Marys and, if possible, the Holy Rosary. In the first church visited the believer must confess.
Every year, thousands of Catholics follow this tradition, to the point that churches are forced to open their doors until midnight and in some of them even prayer vigils are held.
In Ecuador "8 out of 10 Ecuadorians who claim to have a religious affiliation are Catholic." Therefore, Holy Week represents one of the most important celebrations in the country in terms of tradition, culture and religion.
