The Primer Grito de la Independencia, on August 10, 1809, is one of the most emblematic remembrances of Ecuador since it is one of the main antecedents to the Battle of Pichincha that took place on May 24, 1822 and in which the total independence from Spain was achieved, after almost 300 years under Spanish rule.
TRADITIONS AND ACTIVITIES:
August 10 is widely celebrated throughout the whole country as a national holiday. It marks the beginning of a new time in history for Ecuadorians. People celebrate this day with fun and enjoyment. For this day different cultural programs and events are organized in different parts of the country and especially in the capital of Quito.
In Quito, events are organized in the Plaza de la Independencia and the Government Palace. The whole city is brightly illuminated. Military parades and cultural events are also held to celebrate with joy on this wonderful occasion. To add to the list, different agricultural hobbies along with dances and music parades also happen showcasing the rich culture and tradition of our country.
To commemorate this date, the death of the compatriots has been immortalized in the Independence Monument, located in the Plaza Grande, next to the seat of the Presidency, known as the Carondelet Palace, in Quito, Ecuador.
